Approaches to Operation and Maintenance of Expressways that Enduringly Underpins Safety, Reliability, Comfort and Convenience
Approaches to Safety and Reliability
To maintain a safe and reliable driving environment, we have been striving , such as regularly inspecting expressway structures, conducting traffic patrols, implementing measures against snow and ice during winter as well as cracking down on overweight/overloaded vehicles, which have a major adverse impact on deterioration of expressway structures.
We are regularly inspecting and clean facilities to maintain the expressway environment for safe driving.
We are patrolling expressways around the clock, 365 days of the year, keeping updated traffic status and road status.
Snow and ice countermeasures
Ensuring safe driving even in winter as our mission, we are taking snow and ice countermeasures such as snow-removal and prevention of icing.
Cracking down on vehicles violating the law
We are working with the police to crack down on vehicles violating the law, such as overweight ones.
Approaches to Comfort and Convenience
We are increasing the number of lanes by adding auxiliary lanes to solve/alleviate traffic jams as well as introducing “Dora-Wari,” a unique discount program in cooperation with local communities.
Solving/alleviating traffic jams (auxiliary lane)
To make expressways more comfortable, we are increasing the number of auxiliary lanes in sections where traffic jams often occur.
Discount program “Dora-Wari”
We are introducing “Dora-Wari” in cooperation with local communities, such as a toll discount program for tourists visiting Japan and one for promoting tourism.
Extra Approaches to Ensure “Safety and Reliability”
Working to Establish Long-Lasting Expressways (Expressway Renewal Project)
Aiming to perpetually sustain the expressway network’s functions in aging expressways, we have been working on a program to implement a large-scale renewal and repair of expressway structures since FY 2015. Also, in order to disseminate the necessity of such a major renewal program, we are calling the program “Expressway Renewal Project”, and decided the logo with other expressway companies.

Smart Maintenance Highway (SMH)
In order to ensure the safety and reliability of road infrastructure for the long-term, we announced the SMH Framework in 2013, which intends to implement maintenance management, renewal and management techniques against the aging of social infrastructures.
SMH is one of our Group’s most important projects under which we promote Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and mechanization, establish a comprehensive maintenance system with our engineers’ expertise, and thereby upgrade and streamline infrastructure management capabilities for the entire group by FY2020.
