Employee Interview 02 Civil Engineering

Joined in 2012 JO

Kanto Regional Head Office Yokohama Construction Office
Iwase Kasama Construction Site

Graduated from the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Construction

Q1.What is your current job?

My current job is to manage the tunnel construction using a huge excavating machine called a shield machine. Every day, I work with the construction contractor to confirm the construction plan, consider how to respond when issues arise on-site, manage the schedule, and do various other things. We also take steps to promote understanding of the project, such as holding on-site tours for the surrounding area, and place orders with external parties for soil surveys and surveys of surrounding houses. I'm happy to be able to be involved in the peak period of such a large-scale construction project at such a good time.

Q2.
Is it rewarding?

When I was working at the Mito Construction Office, I was involved in the project to open the Ken-O Expressway from Ken-O Road Chuo Interchange to Sakai-Furukawa Interchange. After the opening, I was able to see up close the joy of not only the construction workers but also the local people, and I felt a great sense of accomplishment and a strong sense of having contributed to the community. Later, there was an opportunity for past employees and other related parties who had worked at the construction office to gather, and a total of about 100 people gathered, reminiscing about the hardships they had faced and thanking each other for their efforts. I was surprised once again at how many different people were involved in the success of one project. I feel a sense of accomplishment in working together with so many related parties to advance one project.

Q3. Why did you join the company?

I was good at physics in high school and was interested in large-scale structures, which led me to study civil engineering at university. When I started looking for a job, I was attracted to the idea of working to support Expressway that we use every day, and I applied to join the company. Unlike general contractors and construction consulting companies, I can work in a variety of situations, from planning and designing Expressway to construction and maintenance, and I also interested in the wide range of work that is available, as they also run a service area business.

Q4. Have you ever thought that you have grown?

When work was piling up and I couldn't get things done, my boss gave me advice like, "Don't take it all on yourself, put yourself in the other person's shoes and get the people around you involved in the work." Most of our work is done together with many people involved, including the client. This made me realize that there were areas I could improve in my management style, and since then, I have always tried to put myself in the other person's shoes and think about how to properly convey my thoughts and what I want to do, how to communicate that person's motivation, and how to communicate in a way that allows both parties to work comfortably. Thanks to that, I think my management skills have improved.

Also, during my first time working in a construction office, I was able to experience the entire process from ordering construction, to construction management, to completion, and opening to service as the main person in charge, which gave me confidence.

Q5. of NEXCO EAST
I love this place!

It's been 11 years since I joined the company, but I never get bored of my job because I have had a variety of experiences. I like learning new things, so I'm also attracted to the fact that I can study and accumulate knowledge every day. It's also fun to be transferred to different places and live there.

I'm blessed to meet new colleagues at my new workplace, so I don't have to worry about stress. I'm transferred every 2-3 years, so I think that's why I can work with ease. On the other hand, as everyone is transferred, the number of familiar faces I've worked with is increasing all over eastern Japan. Even if we're far away, it's reassuring to know that there are many people I can rely on when I'm in trouble.

Q6. What kind of future do you want to lead?

Right now, I am working on the construction in front of me to complete the project, which has been decided as to what to build and where by when. In the future, I would like to work in a department that makes business plans. I would like to work in a position where I can research and analyze traffic volume and congestion occurrence, and think about where it would be effective to start a new business, how much the business will cost, what effects it will have, and what problems it can solve. By doing so, I believe that not only will I be able to broaden my own career, but I will also be able to visualize the future and contribute to the development of the local community and the revitalization of economic activity.

day off

I spend most of my days off looking after my children. Bathing my newborn son, eating meals with him, going out with him, and seeing his smile make all the tiredness from work disappear somewhere. When my son gets a little older, I want to go to concerts and festivals that are my hobbies with him.

Also, after having children, I wanted a home that could be used as a base even if I were to be transferred to a rural area, so last year I bought a detached house. Now I enjoy thinking about the layout of the rooms, and on weekends I enjoy creating storage space, planning the garden, and other aspects of my new home.
