Do you know the longest Expressway in Japan? The answer is the Tohoku Expressway. The distance is about 680km. Conversely, the shortest Expressway in Japan is the Shin-Kuko Expressway (Narita City, Chiba Prefecture) at 3.9km. The total distance of the Expressway under our jurisdiction is 3,943 km when these individual routes are connected. This is the length that accounts for more than 40% of Japan's Expressway.

Since the Japan Highway Public Corporation was split and privatized in 2005 and NEXCO EAST was established, we have opened 605 kilometers of Expressway. As a result, traffic congestion in the metropolitan area is eased, tourism is supported through a smooth transportation network, and logistics efficiency is improved.

The Great East Japan Earthquake also caused major damage to Expressway. A total of about 870km of traffic was damaged. We worked on emergency restoration work day and night, and completed temporary restoration work that enabled emergency vehicles to pass about 20 hours after the earthquake. After 13 days, emergency restoration work was completed to allow general vehicles to pass through.

The longest mountain tunnel in Japan

Kanetsu Tunnel.
The Kanetsu Tunnel connecting Niigata Prefecture and Gunma Prefecture is about 11 kilometers long. This is the longest mountain tunnel in Japan. Until then, it took a long time to cross the mountain pass due to snow accumulation and frozen road surfaces in winter, but the opening of the Kanetsu Tunnel greatly shortened the time, and the transportation of goods and people between Niigata and the Kanto region dramatically improved. It grew and contributed to the dawn of the new era of the Sea of Japan.

Japan's longest bridge

The Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line Expressway is a 15.1km long Expressway that traverses the central part of Tokyo Bay and connects Kawasaki City in Kanagawa Prefecture and Kisarazu City in Chiba Prefecture. The Aqua Bridge, which spans Japan's first marine rest facility "Umihotaru" and connects to the Kisarazu side, is the longest bridge in Japan with a total length of 4,384m. With the opening of the Aqua-Line, Kisarazu City's population has increased, tourism demand creation and corporate expansion in the Boso area, and the location of large-scale commercial facilities have progressed dramatically.

We have planted trees on an area of about 3,700ha by 2020 on the Expressway site. Converting this to Tokyo Dome, it is actually 787 pieces. The absorption and fixation effect of Co2 is estimated to be approximately 39,000 tons. We will continue to contribute to the conservation of the global environment and the formation of a recycling-oriented society, and will promote efforts to conserve the living environment along the road and the natural environment.
