Q1.What is your current job?
Our company has established a local subsidiary in India and is providing the maintenance technology we have cultivated in Japan. Specifically, we are working on pavement inspection work in India using the road surface condition measurement vehicle "E-NEXCO Eye" (*1). To carry out this work, NEXCO EAST manufactured a measurement vehicle for the local market that has a proven track record in Japan, and after conducting training for Indian engineers who will be in charge of vehicle assembly and practical work on-site, we started the survey last year. Although overseas business trips were difficult due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I myself traveled to India for about two months during the approximately two years since I joined the Overseas Business Division, to conduct preliminary meetings, supervise work, and explain road surface condition technology and operating methods to Indian engineers in order to manage the assembly at the vehicle factory of the local company.
Furthermore, the Overseas Business Division, acting as a contractor, carries out consulting work commissioned by JICA and other organizations. This includes proposing road maintenance and ITS technologies, including ETC, that we have cultivated in Japan, to overseas clients, as well as conducting research on advanced case studies abroad. I myself have also been involved in research on ITS initiatives in Europe.
*1 Road surface condition measurement vehicle "E-NEXCO Eye": This vehicle accurately assesses road surface IRI (ride comfort), cracks, rutting, etc., while driving. It is a customized version of the equipment used in Japan, adapted for local specifications.
*2 ITS (Intelligent Transport System)... This refers to an advanced road traffic system that aims to improve the safety and comfort of Expressway through road management using the latest technologies such as ICT and AI analysis.
Q2.
Is it rewarding?
India has achieved remarkable economic development in recent years. The population is growing, there is a large workforce, and it is not uncommon to see young people in management positions. The cities are vibrant and full of energy and hope, reminiscent of Japan's period of rapid economic growth. Working in such an environment is very stimulating and extremely interesting. I also feel a sense of fulfillment knowing that my work is contributing to the development of the country's Expressway. As is typical of working overseas, there were times when I struggled due to differences in national character, but it was precisely because of those struggles that I felt such a sense of accomplishment when E-NEXCO Eye was launched.
Q3. Why did you join the company?
During my student years, I researched precipitation forecasting in Asia, and through visits to Asian countries such as Vietnam and Taiwan, I developed a strong interest in infrastructure development overseas. Therefore, during my job search, I focused on companies that seemed to have the potential to contribute to the export of infrastructure overseas. This company was one of them, and since I had been interested in Expressway since childhood, I participated in their internship.
During my internship, I was deeply impressed by the sheer scale of the construction sites in Hokkaido that I saw up close! The thought that this kind of work could expand from all over Eastern Japan to overseas was sure to be rewarding and enjoyable, and that was one of the reasons I wanted to join the company.
Q4. Have you ever thought that you have grown?
At my first assignment, a management office in Hokkaido, I was involved in bridge repair work and other related tasks. I still vividly remember how, through receiving various advice from my seniors, I deeply felt the importance of considering everyone's opinions and having "what I want to do" in order to proceed with tasks that don't have a single right answer and achieve the objectives. Later, during my training at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the amount of work and content I handled, such as dealing with the Diet and policy considerations, was enormous, and I learned a different way of working, such as being able to get things done instantly. At the Kanto Regional Head Office, I had to manage not just individual construction projects, but entire projects, which made me more aware of the importance of forward-thinking management.
And now, in the Overseas Business Division of the Technology Headquarters, where I currently work, I feel that I am growing significantly in ways different from before. First of all, overseas, people don't understand things as easily as they do in Japan, so it's necessary to clearly communicate my thoughts and intentions, which has honed my communication skills. Furthermore, I've learned a lot by noticing the rational perspectives and new ways of doing things that are unique to overseas work. It has given me the opportunity to look at things from various angles. In the future, I would like to broaden my perspective to encompass the entire company from various viewpoints.
Q5. of NEXCO EAST
I love this place!
I like the sense of unity within the company. While work can be tough at times, I share those difficulties with people from our group companies and colleagues within the company, working together towards the goal of opening Expressway. That sense of unity is what gives me strength.
Another thing I like is that there are Expressway everywhere, which I can brag about to my two-year-old son (laughs). At the construction office, I also had the opportunity to introduce the work site to my family, so I'd like to take my child there someday. My son, who loves working vehicles, would definitely be thrilled!
Q6. What kind of future do you want to lead?
In the future, we aim to create a cycle where we share Japan's Expressway maintenance technology with the world, and then utilize the knowledge and experience gained globally in Japan, thereby bridging the gap between Japan and the world. By learning about the circumstances and values of other countries, we hope to break free from isolation and create truly world-class standards. Until now, we have maintained high standards using manual labor, but this inevitably leads to high costs. Amid challenges such as labor shortages, our company is currently using ICT technology to reduce manpower in maintenance, and we hope to further refine this and expand it globally.

how to spend the holidays
I mostly spend my time playing with my son. Now that he's two years old, he's gradually starting to play with friends his own age, so lately we've been going outdoors with friends and their families.
And now, as we are expecting our second child, I plan to take a month of paternity leave. Raising two children who are three years apart will surely be challenging, but I want to work together with my wife and enjoy watching our children grow.
