Employee Interview #10: Administrative Staff

Joined the company in 2016 SO

Tohoku Regional Head Office, General Planning Department, General Planning Section

Graduated from the Faculty of Economics, Department of Economics.

Q1.What is your current job?

I currently belong to three departments: the General Planning Division, the Group Management Team, and the Tourism Promotion Team. My main responsibilities in the Tourism Promotion Team include disseminating information to attract visitors to the Tohoku region, conducting PR activities at events, and planning and managing a smartphone stamp rally to promote sightseeing around Tohoku.

In addition, as part of my work in the General Planning Department, I am involved in promoting CSR activities and raising awareness of the SDGs within the Tohoku Regional Head Office jurisdiction. We have employees at Regional Head Office write down simple goals such as "don't litter" and "conserve water," and display them in the break room, implementing initiatives to help them see the SDGs as something that concerns them personally. Our challenge going forward is how to get employees interested in the SDGs, a societal initiative, and how to get them to consciously incorporate it into their work, and we are constantly experimenting to find solutions.

Q2.
Is it rewarding?

I find it rewarding to be able to plan and implement projects that have an impact on such a wide area as the Tohoku region. While working on projects in collaboration with external parties such as tourism departments in each Tohoku prefecture, railway companies, and airport companies involves many coordination issues and can be challenging, I enjoy the new challenges, such as having my opinions incorporated into visuals like posters, and discussing PR methods like newspapers, magazines, and social media with the entire tourism promotion team! I've also become more attentive to what I can do for the Tohoku region through Expressway.

Speaking of which, I was really happy when we displayed a Expressway patrol car at a tourist event and a lot of children gathered around. I believe that memorable experiences in childhood are often linked to the careers and jobs that people aspire to later in life, so I approached them with the hope that they might one day be involved with Expressway.

Q3. Why did you join the company?

During my time as a student, I had the opportunity to be on the organizing committee for school events, and I found the behind-the-scenes work interesting and rewarding. Perhaps because of this, I had a strong desire to be of service to others and support society, so I focused my job search on infrastructure companies.

As a result, I received job offers from several companies, but I decided to join this company because I wanted to work for it, which supports society through Expressway across a wide area of Eastern Japan. The kindness of the employees I met during the interviews was also a deciding factor. In interviews at other companies, I felt nervous and sometimes couldn't speak as well as I wanted, but I remember that the interviewers at this company were very easy to talk to and the atmosphere was warm.

Q4. Have you ever thought that you have grown?

During my student days, I was more of a passive type, often only taking action after being asked. However, after joining the company and gaining experience, I've become more proactive in my work. I think one of the key points of my growth is that when my boss asks me to do a new task, I can now think positively, like, "That sounds interesting! Everything is an experience, so let's give it a try!"

Since much of our work involves collaborating with others, I've learned the importance of relying on and consulting with those around me instead of trying to handle everything alone. Naturally, I've also learned to think about how we can work together smoothly, rather than just making requests unilaterally. When making a request, I try to communicate clearly, specifying things like, "I'd like you to respond in this way, in this format." I think I've become able to take a broader perspective than I did in my first or second year.

Q5. of NEXCO EAST
I love this place!

I think we can be proud of our unity in times of emergency. When there's a possibility of road closures due to accidents or natural disasters, everyone, including people from our group companies and regardless of their job title, goes into the disaster response room to deal with the situation. The speed at which we immediately grasp the situation on site, divide up roles, and take action embodies the responsibility and pride we have as Expressway professionals.

When I experienced that at my first assignment, the Chiba Management Office, I was surprised at how quickly everyone, even those I didn't normally interact with in my daily work, became united. I was impressed, thinking, "Wow, that's amazing," and I desperately followed my seniors, saying, "I'll do anything!" I'll never forget the passion I felt back then.

Q6. What kind of future do you want to lead?

Although I am not currently directly involved in the management or construction of Expressway, I experience firsthand the influence and role they play through Expressway such as promoting tourism. Expressway are a vital social infrastructure that must be carefully protected for the foreseeable future. With a strong sense of responsibility for supporting not only logistics drivers, travelers, and business travelers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, but also local communities, I want to continue working with all my might towards the future.

Furthermore, by continuing to gain diverse work experience, I hope to become an employee that not only new recruits but also my superiors and colleagues want to work with.

day off

Because I'm involved in tourism-related work in the Tohoku region, I often travel around Tohoku during my vacations. Tohoku has not only beautiful nature and delicious food, but also many charms that you only discover when you visit. When I stop by roadside stations and tourist facilities, I check the flyers and brochures there to use as reference for my work.

For example, I remember being really impressed by a map I found in Aomori that listed only apple pie shops using the region's famous apples. I sometimes use things like that to find selling points in each region and use them as material for the travel magazines I produce. Also, discovering hidden gems that only locals know about is one of my pleasures. Refreshing myself during vacations also helps to boost my motivation at work.

Their field of activity is wide,
It can grow significantly

I remember that when I went to the company's interviews and information sessions, instead of being told "Good luck," I was told "Take care of your health." It warmed my heart to know that they understood how difficult job hunting can be. In fact, since joining the company, I've noticed that there are many kind and considerate employees.

Furthermore, we believe our company offers a wide range of experiences. Even the same tasks can have unique characteristics depending on the region, and the way you're involved differs depending on your organization and position. Each transfer brings new discoveries and learning opportunities. We highly recommend our company to anyone who wants to gain diverse experience in the vast field of Expressway!
