Mitigation of traffic congestion by providing speed recovery information in sags etc.

  • In-bound to alleviate congestion by the speed reduction at the slope and sag portion, particularly in places where large traffic congestion is predicted, LED with excellent visibility *1 We carried out "congestion mitigation measures by providing speed recovery information" using signs.
  • During the period of this Bon Festival, Tohoku Expressway and Kan-Etsu Expressway carried out countermeasures to 11 locations, Large, and traffic congestion was reduced by about 10% at all countermeasures.
  • In particular, near the Tohoku Expressway Out-bound Hanyu PA and the Kan-Etsu Expressway In-bound Hanazono IC, the daily traffic volume was almost the same or increased on the day when the measures were taken compared to before the measures were taken. It improved by 10km/hr and the traffic congestion was halved.

1 Overview of "Providing speed recovery information using LED signs"

In-bound congestion caused by the slowdown in slope and sag portion
In-bound at hill or sag part, by there are car speed decreases unconsciously, distance to the following vehicle is Chijimiri, by stepping on the chain to brake, traffic congestion occurs.
(The first car that slows down doesn't notice that it caused a traffic jam)

Congestion is alleviated by issuing a "speed reduction alert" near the beginning of the congestion

Before traffic jam
Provides information to let people know that this place may unknowingly slow down and cause congestion
(Information offerings: "slowdowns Caution", "○○○ m away In-bound hill")
During a traffic jam
Soon the traffic will end and we will provide information to ask for speed recovery
(Information provided: "End of traffic jam in ○○○m" "Please recover speed")

The daily traffic volume increased by 8% compared to the same day of the year when no countermeasures were taken, but the countermeasures improved the traveling speed near the beginning of the traffic congestion, and the traffic congestion decreased by about 60%.

Daily traffic) No measures: 67.3 thousand units ⇒ Measures: 72.6 thousand units (+8%)
(Traveling speed near the beginning of traffic jam) No countermeasure: 40km/hr ⇒ With countermeasure: 54km/hr
Traffic congestion*1) No countermeasure: 157.9km・hr ⇒ With countermeasure: 58.5km・hr (-63%)

The daily traffic volume was about the same as the same day in the year when no measures were taken, but the measures improved the running speed near the beginning of the traffic jam, and the traffic jam was reduced by about 50%.

Daily traffic) Without measures: 67.8 thousand units ⇒ With measures: 68.0 thousand units (+0.3%)
(Traveling speed near the beginning of traffic jam) No countermeasure: 24km/hr ⇒ With countermeasure: 32km・hr

*1 "Traffic volume" is an index that indicates the size of traffic (congestion length x congestion time)

〔reference〕
"Providing speed recovery information using LED signs" has been confirmed to be effective as a measure against traffic congestion based on the results of measures taken so far. This measure is cheaper than other measures against traffic congestion, so NEXCO EAST is actively working on measures to alleviate traffic congestion.
