1 4 lane construction overview

Ban-Etsu Expressway branches off from the Joban Expressway Iwaki JCT (Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture), and the Koriyama JCT (Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture) Tohoku Expressway, Niigata Chuo (Niigata Prefecture Niigata Prefecture) It is a national highway with a total length of approximately 213km that connects to the Hokuriku Expressway in the city.

The whole line was opened by opening the Nishiaizu IC and Tsugawa IC in October 1997, forming a wide area network with the Joban Expressway, Tohoku Expressway and Hokuriku Expressway and the southern Tohoku region. It is a route that plays an important role in contributing to the economic, industrial, and cultural development of the areas along the line.

About 71.4km between Iwaki JCT and Koriyama JCT, we have started construction of 4 lanes from March 1999, and 77% (55.2km) of 4 lanes have been completed so far.

Between the Iwaki JCT and Koriyama JCT due to the completion of four lanes for the three sections ((1) Funabiki Miharu IC-Koriyama East IC, (2) Sashio PA-Ono IC, (3) Iwaki JCT-Iwaki Sanwa IC) Will be connected by all four lanes.

The area between the Funabiki Miharu IC and the Koriyama Higashi IC was initially scheduled to be completed in FY2009, but it was planned to be completed this time because we were able to progress the process with the cooperation of related organizations.

2 Effect of completion

The four-lane project between Iwaki JCT and Koriyama JCT was started by the Japan Highway Public Corporation (JH) at the time by an enforcement order on December 25, 1998.

This completion will eliminate the accident of jumping out into the oncoming lane and enable smooth and comfortable driving as follows.

  • Eliminating traffic congestion during busy periods

The average annual traffic volume between Iwaki JCT and Koriyama JCT is about 10,000 vehicles/day, but during busy periods (summer vacation, holiday season, etc.), there are times when it exceeds 30,000 vehicles/day, which causes traffic congestion. .. With this completion, traffic congestion due to traffic congestion will be greatly reduced and access to tourist destinations will be improved.

  • Elimination of alternate traffic regulation on one side

In the case of two lanes, one-sided alternate traffic regulation was required when performing maintenance work (repair work necessary for maintaining and managing roads), but it became possible to regulate four lanes and one-sided alternate traffic There will be no suspension on the main line due to regulations.

  • Improving regulatory speed and ensuring punctuality

With four lanes, the regulated speed will be changed from 70km/h to 80km/h. In addition, overtaking is also possible, which is expected to contribute to ensuring punctuality.

  • Strengthening redundancy

The Expressway connecting the Kanto region and the Tohoku region are the Tohoku Expressway and the Joban Expressway. This time of the Ban-Etsu Expressway 4-lane completion of and is scheduled for December 20, Kita-Kanto Expressway by the opening of the, alternative functions such as disaster will be greatly enhanced.

3 Features of construction

  • Reuse of guardrail

The guardrail in the section completed this time is being recycled by reusing the guardrail removed in the construction. In addition, waterways are reused as well.

  • Adoption of narrow box girder

At Natsuigawabashi between Sashio PA and Ono IC, we adopted narrow box girders to make the girder width narrower than conventional box girders and work to reduce construction costs.
