NEXCO EAST Tohoku Regional Head Office (Miyagi Ward, Sendai City) has compiled a forecast of traffic congestion due to traffic Expressway in the Tohoku region over the New Year's holiday period (10 days from Friday, December 26, 2025 to Sunday, January 4, 2026).
1. 1. Congestion forecast
On Expressway in the Tohoku region, traffic will be concentrated with customers returning to their hometowns over the New Year holidays, but congestion of more than 5km due to traffic concentration is not expected. The peak traffic volume is expected to be on December 27th (Sat) and 30th (Tue) for Out-bound travel, and on January 3rd (Sat) for In-bound. We ask that you try to spread out your use of the expressways by staggering your departure days and times.
2. Information on special website for traffic congestion season, traffic jam forecast guide, etc.
NEXCO EAST 's customer website, "DraPla," has set up a special site for traffic congestion periods. In addition to publishing a traffic congestion forecast guide, it also provides information on how to avoid traffic congestion.

3. Eliminate wrong-way driving –Expressway are one-way streets.
Driving the wrong way is a dangerous act that can be life-threatening.
- Please pay close attention to regulatory signs, guide signs, and road markings, and drive in the correct direction.
- U-turns and backing up on Expressway are strictly prohibited.
- If you hear or see information about wrong-way driving, slow down, maintain a sufficient distance, and keep a close eye on the movements of the vehicle ahead.
4. When using Expressway in winter
- Before you depart, please check the latest road information on Expressway information site "DraTra," LINE, X (formerly Twitter), etc.
- Rest areas are expected to be crowded during the New Year period, so please refuel, refuel, and use the restroom as early as possible.
We also ask that you park in designated spaces to make it easier for larger vehicles to use the facility. - If the car stops due to an accident or breakdown at Expressway, do not stand on the road, stay in the car, and immediately evacuate to a safe place such as outside the guardrail.
