NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office (Sapporo City Atsubetsu-ku) has summarized the congestion forecast and its countermeasures during the Golden Week period [April 25-May 6] due to traffic concentration on Expressway in Hokkaido.
Congestion forecast

This congestion forecast is based on the past Golden Week, Obon, New Year holidays, and other traffic conditions.
- We predict that May 3 (Saturday, national holiday) will be the peak of congestion.
- Congestion is predicted at the following 7 locations.
- Approximately 15km of traffic congestion is predicted between Kita-Hiroshima IC and Eniwa IC (Chitose direction) on May 3 (Saturday, national holiday)
- At the Kita-Hiroshima IC exit (Chitose direction), you can expect a traffic jam of about 5km from May 3 (Sat./holiday) to 4th (Sun./holiday).
- At the Kita-Hiroshima IC exit (direction Sapporo), traffic congestion of up to 10 km is predicted from May 3 (Sat./holiday) to May 5 (Mon./holiday).
- At the Onuma Park IC Exit (toward Hakodate) on the Doo Expressway, a traffic jam of approximately 5 km is predicted on May 3 (Saturday, national holiday).
- Approximately 5km of traffic congestion is predicted on May 3 (Saturday/holiday) between the Futako IC and Fushiko IC (direction Chitose)
- Doto Expressway 5km of traffic congestion between Tomamu IC and Tokachi Shimizu IC (toward Sapporo) on Saturday, May 3
- Approximately 5km of traffic congestion will be predicted on May 3 (Saturday/holiday) between the Doto Expressway Doumu Mukawa Hobetsu IC and the Shimukappu IC (direction Sapporo)
Congestion measures

Regarding congestion measures during the Golden Week period, we plan to implement the following measures.
- Providing traffic congestion information and warnings for rear-end collisions by using labeled vehicles at the end of traffic congestion
- Arrangement of parking lot organizers and provision of temporary toilets at rest facilities

- Avoid congestion by referring to this congestion forecast, such as changing the customer's use day or departure time to a time other than the time when traffic congestion is predicted, or considering the use of the IC before and after the IC exit congestion We kindly ask for your understanding and cooperation.
- In Hokkaido, even during Golden Week, snowfall and road surface freezing may occur.
We recommend that you wear winter tires after checking the weather information to your destination in advance. - Excessive speed will cause an accident. Please keep a sufficient distance between cars and drive at a safe speed suitable for the road conditions. If you feel tired, don't overdo it and try to take an early break at the rest facility.
