Commentary by the judge, Professor Ryusuke Ito

In 2020, the number of applicants for this contest was slightly reduced, reflecting the sharp decrease in tourists from Japan and overseas to Hokkaido due to the global epidemic of the new coronavirus and the refraining from going out. On the other hand, the number of works that are technically superior compared to the average year was collected, that is, there were many entries for works with a high degree of "seriousness", and it was more difficult to judge.
In particular, the "Expressway" section has the highest level of work in the history of this section. Among them, Sachiko Miura's "Golden Doto Expressway", which won the highest award, was a work that beautifully packed the beauty of autumn Hokkaido into one frame.
We received many beautiful night scenes that made full use of long exposures, correction of brightness and color tones with development software and image processing software, and emotional productions that used backlight. Speaking of works that make use of photography and development technology, it can be said that "Yotei no Yoru" by Yoshikazu Jimbo, who won the highest award in the "Four Seasons of Hokkaido" category, is the first.
It was a year when I was forced to refrain from traveling and going out, but it was a contest that made me feel a great attraction for the four seasons I met in the photos.
