Mitigation of traffic congestion due to traffic concentration in sags

  • In-bound to alleviate congestion by the speed reduction at the slope and sag portion, up to 20km or more traffic congestion is predicted Tohoku Expressway Hanyu near IC (In-bound line) and Kan-Etsu Expressway Garden near IC (In-bound using "LED indicator wheel in line) Traffic congestion mitigation measures were implemented by providing "speed recovery information".
  • On the day when the countermeasures were taken, the daily traffic volume was almost the same at both locations compared to the same day of the previous year, but traffic congestion was around 90% in the vicinity of the Hanyu IC on the Tohoku Expressway (In-bound line) compared to the previous year, and around the Hanazono IC on the Kan-Etsu Expressway (In-bound Line) decreased about 20%.

1 Overview of "Providing speed recovery information using LED-marked vehicles"

In-bound congestion caused by the slowdown in slope and sag portion

In-bound at hill or sag part, by that some car speed decreases unconsciously, the following vehicle is the inter-vehicle distance Chijimiri,
Congestion occurs due to continuous braking.
(The first car that slows down doesn't notice that it caused a traffic jam)

Congestion is alleviated by issuing a "speed reduction alert" near the beginning of the congestion

Before traffic jam:
Provides information to let people know that this place may unknowingly slow down and cause congestion
(Information offerings: "slowdowns Caution", "○○○ m away In-bound hill")
渋滞時:
Soon the traffic will end and we will provide information to ask for speed recovery
(Information provided: "○○m ahead traffic jam end" "Please recover speed")

2 Effect of reducing traffic congestion near the Hanyu IC on the Tohoku Expressway (In-bound)

The daily traffic volume was almost the same as the same day of the previous year, but traffic congestion decreased by about 90%.

* Includes traffic congestion mitigation due to a temporary reduction in traffic volume due to an accident in the immediate upstream
