NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office (Atsubetsu Ward, Sapporo City) has summarized the traffic conditions on Expressway in Hokkaido during the Golden Week period (hereinafter referred to as "GW period") as follows.

Average daily traffic volume during one period

  • The traffic volume during the period was about the same as the previous year, although the weather was not favorable. There are many sections with the highest traffic volume on 5/3 (Friday) or 5/5 (Sunday). Generally, the first half of the GW period was on the same level as the previous year, and the second half was on an increasing trend from the previous year.
  • Traffic volume of the main section, last year stretched Do-O Expressway Hakodate direction and two years ago, Yubari IC ~ Shimukappu was opened an IC Doto Expressway in such were up slightly from the previous year. In the Asahikawa area of the Do-O Expressway and the Sasson Expressway there was a slight decrease from the previous year.
  • Between Tomamu IC and Tokachi Shimizu IC on the Doto Expressway 5/3 (Friday) was the most frequent with 19,100 units/day, and since the opening of the Yubari IC-Shimukappu IC, it was 19,200 units/day (8/14) on Obon last year. It became the next traffic volume.
  • The average traffic volume during the GW period between the Ono Koen IC and Mori IC on the Do-O Expressway which opened in November 2012, was 5,800 vehicles/day, with a maximum of 9,400 vehicles/day on 5/5 (Sun).

2 Traffic congestion

  • The number of traffic jams this year was 10 as in the previous year. Of these, there were three congestions over 5km.
  • The longest traffic congestion was due to traffic concentration in the direction of Chitose between Eniwa IC and Kitahiroshima IC on the Do-O Expressway on May 3 (Friday). At peak time (around 11:20), the area around Waatsu PA At the beginning, it became 20.3km.
  • In addition to the above, as a traffic congestion of more than 10 km, on the Friday, May 3, in the direction of Sapporo on the Doto Expressway, at the peak around the Nagawa tunnel entrance about 6 km before Mukawa Hobetsu IC (13:00) There was a traffic jam of 18.3km.
