NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office (Sapporo City Atsubetsu-ku) has summarized the traffic conditions of Expressway in Hokkaido during the Golden Week period (hereinafter referred to as “GW period”) as follows.
Number of vehicles used during one period and average traffic volume
(1) Number of units used
- During the period, the number of vehicles used on the Expressway in Hokkaido averaged about 180,000 per day, which was 100.3% of the number of vehicles used last year.

(2) Average daily traffic volume in major sections
- This year, the first half of the GW period was a stepping stone holiday, so there was little use from April 27 to April 29 in the first half, and many use from May 3 to May 6 in the second half. ..
- The usage status of each section during the entire GW period is about the same as last year.
- Doto Expressway Between Tomamu IC and Tokachi Shimizu IC, 20,800 cars/day were used on May 3, which was the largest traffic volume since the opening of Yubari IC-Shimukappu IC.

2 Traffic congestion
- The number of traffic jams this year was 13 times, an increase of 3 times compared to last year (10 times).
- The longest traffic congestion was due to the traffic concentration that occurred on May 3 between Tomamu IC and Tokachi Shimizu IC on the Doto Expressway direction of Sapporo. It has reached 19.4 km.
- Also, at the Kitahiroshima IC, there were three traffic congestions (three last year) due to traffic concentration, which is thought to be the effect of nearby commercial facilities.
