NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office (Sapporo City Atsubetsu-ku) has summarized the congestion prediction and its countermeasures due to traffic concentration on Expressway in Hokkaido during the Obon period [August 7th (Thursday) to 17th (Sunday)].

Congestion forecast

This congestion forecast was made based on the past traffic conditions such as Golden Week and Obon.

  • The peak congestion is expected to be August 13 (Wednesday) and August 14 (Thursday).
  • We do not anticipate large congestion on the Hokkaido Expressway, but we expect some congestion near the Kitahiroshima IC exit or near the Kurizawa Bus Stop between Ebetsu East IC and Iwamizawa IC (toward Asahikawa).
  • The Futaru Expressway predicts a traffic jam of about 5 km on the 13th (Wednesday) near the Fushiko IC (direction Chitose).
    In addition, we forecast some congestion at the Asari Main Line toll gate (Otaru direction).
  • Doto Expressway is expected to be congested between Mukawa Hobetsu IC and Shimukappu IC in both Chitose and Obihiro directions. In particular, we predict traffic congestion of about 5 km near the Hobetsu tunnel on Thursday, the 14th.
  • In addition, the 13 days (water) late at night, by the customers who are returning home from the fireworks, Doto Expressway in Tokachishimizu IC ~ Memuro IC (Chitose direction), we predict the congestion of about 5km.
  • The Chitose Air Base Festival is scheduled to be held on Sunday, August 3, outside the Bon Festival. Congestion is expected at the exit of the Chitose IC on the Hokkaido Expressway, so please use with plenty of time.

Congestion measures

Regarding congestion measures during the Obon period, we plan to implement the following measures.

  • Providing traffic congestion information and warnings for rear-end collisions by using labeled vehicles at the end of traffic congestion
  • Arrangement of parking lot organizers and provision of temporary toilets at rest facilities

  • Avoid congestion by referring to this congestion forecast, such as changing the customer's use day or departure time to a time other than the time when congestion is predicted, or considering the use of the IC before and after the IC exit congestion We kindly ask for your understanding and cooperation.
  • Please be sure to check the latest road traffic information before departure, as the congestion situation may change significantly due to accidents and weather conditions.
  • Excessive speed will cause an accident. Please keep a sufficient distance between cars and drive at a safe speed suitable for the road conditions. If you feel tired, don't overdo it and try to take an early break at the rest facility.
