NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office Official X (formerly Twitter) will be encouraging safe driving through a quiz on traffic safety. Based on "2. NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office Summer Traffic Safety Campaign Key Points", we plan to ask questions about points to be careful of when using Expressway, so please use it to drive safely!

2. Key points of NEXCO EAST Hokkaido Regional Head Office 's summer traffic safety campaign

  1. Don't drink and drive, don't let others drink and drive, don't tolerate it, and don't turn a blind eye to it. Never drink and drive.
On July 13, 2014, a drunk driving hit-and-run incident occurred in Otaru City, resulting in four deaths and injuries.
The following June, a drunk driver hit-and-run incident occurred in Sunagawa City, leaving five members of a family dead or injured.
In Hokkaido, the "Hokkaido Ordinance for the Eradication of Drunk Driving" was enacted in December 2015 as a consensus of the prefecture's residents, with the aim of each and every Hokkaido resident taking independent action to eradicate drunk driving from the prefecture as soon as possible and realize a society in which people can live in peace. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the ordinance's enactment.
Don't drink and drive, don't let others drink, don't tolerate it, and don't overlook it. This is true whether on ordinary roads or on Expressway. Each and every person's strong will will lead to the eradication of drunk driving. Not only for yourself, but for your family, friends, and everyone else, never drink and drive.
  2. Prevent wrong-way driving accidents! Learn how to prevent wrong-way driving and what to do about it!
Driving the wrong way is a dangerous act that can lead to tragic consequences, such as head-on collisions. On Expressway across the country, cases of wrong-way driving occur roughly once every two days.
If you see a vehicle driving the wrong way, please report it to 110, the road emergency number (#9910), or by contacting a toll booth or rest facility attendant, or by using the emergency phone at the rest facility. When reporting from a mobile phone, please make sure that a passenger in the vehicle makes the report.
If you hear or see information about a wrong-way vehicle, don't panic. Slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. If you spot a wrong-way vehicle ahead, avoid a collision. Be especially careful as wrong-way vehicles tend to drive in the overtaking lanefrom your vehicle's perspective.
Wrong-way driving often occurs near interchanges, toll booths, and SA/PA. To avoid doing so yourself, make sure you know which direction you are heading in before you set off. If you do find yourself driving the wrong way, don't panic and stop in a safe place. Don't stay in the car. Call 110, the road emergency number (#9910), or a nearby emergency phone to report the incident.
As a measure to prevent wrong-way driving, NEXCO EAST has installed warning signs, large arrow road markings, and rubber pole extensions and high-luminance arrow boards at Expressway junctions. In addition, we have posted a website on our website called "Let's Eliminate Wrong-Way Driving" where you can learn about wrong-way driving, so please take a look.

  3. Obey the speed limit and maintain an appropriate distance from other vehicles!
The summer (July and August), when tourism demand is at its peak, is the busiest period of the year, and we expect an increase in tourists from outside Hokkaido and overseas who do not normally use Hokkaido's Expressway.
By paying attention to basic points such as obeying speed limits and maintaining an appropriate distance between vehicles, the risk of a traffic accident can be significantly reduced.
When using Expressway, please keep the above points in mind and enjoy Hokkaido's summer to the fullest.
  4. Take an early break before you feel tired!
Many people are planning long-distance driving tours during the summer holidays, but have you ever felt sleepy or tired while driving on Expressway? Continuing to drive in such a state could lead to a serious accident.
When driving on Expressway, take frequent breaks at SA/PAs before you feel tired, not after you've gotten tired. SA/PAs on Expressway have plenty of delicious food and places to refresh yourself. Take a break without pushing yourself too hard, and continue driving safely.
