NEXCO EAST Kanto Regional Head Office (Taito-ku, Tokyo) opens the Kita-Kanto Expressway (nickname: Kitakan) on Saturday, March 19, 2011 from Kiryu Ota IC to Sananouma IC (extension 18.6km) We will inform you about the traffic conditions and maintenance effects for the second half of the opening of Kitaseki, which has been fully opened due to the following.

Traffic situation

  • The average traffic volume during the second half of the opening period between the Ota Kiryu IC and the Sano Danuma IC is about 27,500 vehicles per day

  • The average traffic volume from March 20th to September 30th, the day after the opening between Kiryu Ota IC and Sananouma IC, which opened on March 19, 2011, is approximately 27,500 vehicles/day.
  • From March 20th to September 30th after the opening of the bus, the number of customers that used the most was about 53,600 vehicles/day during May 3 (Tuesday/holiday) during the Golden Week period.

Wide-area Expressway network expanded by opening all lines

  • Through all of Kitaseki, the shortest route connecting the Chubu/Kinki region and the Tohoku region was formed.

Supporting quick relief activities after the Great East Japan Earthquake

  • It was planned to open the Otagi Kiryu IC-Sano Danuma IC in Kitaseki on March 19th, but from March 12th, the day after the earthquake, emergency vehicles and recovery support vehicles were available.
  • In addition to the SDF's disaster relief team, vehicles for firefighting, blood transportation, etc. passed through Kitaseki and headed for the disaster area.

  • Kitaseki played the role of an emergency transportation route, and the huge storage tank for highly contaminated water used at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station was quickly and smoothly transported to the site.

  • From June 16th to July 6th, 2011, high concentration contaminated water storage tank (120m 3 170 units) were transported from a tank maker in Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture, to the J Village in Naraha Town, Fukushima Prefecture using the route of Tohoku Expressway Kanuma IC ⇒ Via Kitaseki ⇒ Joban Expressway Hirono IC.
  • The police and NEXCO EAST also cooperated in ensuring the safety of the transportation.

Shortening travel time between the three northern Kanto regions

  • Due to the maintenance of Kitaseki, the travel time between prefectural offices in Gunma, Tochigi, and Ibaraki has been shortened by up to approximately 140 minutes using Kitaseki and approximately 40 minutes using general roads.
  • Due to the opening of the Kiryu Ota IC-Sano Danuma IC, the maximum parallel traffic volume on National Route 50 has decreased by about 30%.
