NEXCO EAST Niigata Regional Head Office (Chuo-ku, Niigata City) and the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Takada Garrison (Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture) will conduct a disaster response coordination training exercise simulating a landslide caused by heavy rain at the Echigo-Kawaguchi Service Area (SA) on the E17 Kan-Etsu Expressway (hereinafter referred to as "Kan-Etsu Expressway") on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
This training exercise, now in its ninth year, is based on the "Implementation Agreement on Cooperation between the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Eastern Army and East Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd." and includes training on repairing road unevenness and rescuing crew members from vehicles, with the aim of confirming mutual cooperation in the event of a disaster.
Please note that Echigo-Kawaguchi Service Area (both inbound and outbound lanes) will be open as usual on the day of the training.

Intermittent rainfall occurred in the Chūetsu region, causing landslides on the cut slopes of Expressway.
Some train cars were caught in the collapse and remain stranded on the main line.
The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force was dispatched to the disaster area at the request of the Governor of Niigata Prefecture.
