On January 13, the Yokohama Construction Office held an unveiling ceremony for a mural painted by a local elementary school student in Yokohama City at the soundproof house (Kamigo-cho, Sakae-ku, Yokohama City) for the construction of the Kamariyanishi tunnel on the Yokohama Circular South Line.
We asked the neighboring Shodo Elementary School in Yokohama City to cooperate in the production of the mural paintings, hoping that it would lead to a site familiar to the community, and planned it as a graduation commemoration for the sixth graders.
The mural painting, which is 17 meters high and 32 meters wide, depicts a rainbow that is the same size as the cross section of a full-scale tunnel, which is one of the largest in Japan, and is surrounded by cars, people, animals, mountains, and the sea. Pictures related to the area are drawn colorfully.

In commemoration of the graduation of the sixth grade of Shodo Elementary School in Yokohama City, the mural painting on the soundproof house resembles a rainbow as a road, and colorful paintings associated with areas along the railway line such as cars, people, animals, the Great Buddha of Kamakura, Enoshima, Kanazawa Zoo, and surfers. Hiroaki Ito, the construction manager of the Shodo Construction Zone, Yokohama Construction Office, commented, "It has become a friendly site for people to draw wonderful pictures. We would like to proceed with the construction safely with the cooperation of the local people."
The student said, "I drew an illustration on drawing paper, but I was surprised that the mural was big. I want to drive with my dad when it opens."
The Yokohama Circular South Line is a motorway that connects Kamariya Junction in Kanazawa Ward to National Highway No. 1 in Totsuka Ward. Under construction of the Kamariya Shodo Tunnel, a tunnel is under construction in a section approximately 2 kilometers from Kamariya Junction.
The "soundproof house" that became the canvas of the mural painting was built to prevent noise and earth and sand from scattering due to construction work and to suppress the impact on the surrounding environment.
