Review by Professor Ito

The "Four Seasons Photo Contest in Hokkaido" has reached its 10th anniversary.

This time, we received a record number of 1,023 entries. It can be said that the work level was also the highest ever. A major feature of this contest is that many of the works that dramatically enhance the colors and light of the work were seen due to the spread of processing technologies such as RAW development and image processing software. Among them, the actual feeling of the judging was that "a work with expressive power", or so-called "strong work", was "discovery" such as not observing the artist's eyes and taking photo opportunities. The surprise and delight of the works that discovered the sense of the four seasons and beauty from everyday scenes was reflected in a prominent expression.

The three prize-winning works in the "Landscape with a Expressway" category were lyrical works using "evening light" as a material even though the seasons were different. Although it was a theme section called "Expressway" that seemed difficult, it was a number of submissions that showed even more potential for expression. I would like to ask many people who apply for masterpieces in the “Four Seasons of Hokkaido” category to take on the challenge, and I think this is a worthwhile category.

Next time, I would like to see works with a new perspective on the seasons and trips with the motif of Hokkaido's nature and people's lives.
