NEXCO EAST Sendai Management Office (Aoba Ward, Sendai City) has been installing safety measures since fiscal year 2021 to prevent a recurrence of the snowstorm-related multiple accident that occurred near the Furukawa Interchange on the E4 Tohoku Expressway on January 19, 2021. The final snow fence elevation was completed this fall, completing all planned measures. We are now pleased to announce a summary of our efforts to prevent snowstorm-related multiple accidents.

    • In addition to the existing self-luminous visual guidance lights installed in the median strip, additional self-luminous visual guidance lights will be installed on the road shoulders (total length: approx. 5.6 km)
    • Large visual guidance boards installed in the median strip (total length approx. 3.0 km)
  3. 気象警戒情報板の配置を見直し
    別紙-3【PDF:316KB】
    • The placement of weather warning information boards has been revised to take into account areas where blizzards are likely to occur, allowing for improvements to be made so that warnings can be issued from appropriate locations when visibility is poor (four weather warning information boards).
  4. Accident response training assuming multiple accidents
    Attachment 4 [PDF: 363KB]
    • In order to ensure prompt rescue operations and early access to traffic in the event of an accident, accident response training is conducted jointly with the police, fire department, and other related organizations before the start of winter every year.
