Environmental policy

Based on its Environmental Policy and Environmental Action Guidelines, NEXCO EAST will contribute to the prevention of global warming (carbon neutrality), the creation of a recycling-oriented society (circular economy), and the restoration of nature (nature positive), and will work to reduce the impact on the living environment along roads.

Environmental policy (established in July 2007)

NEXCO EAST positions environmental initiatives as an important management priority, and as a responsible member of society, we aim to be a company that is trusted by society by contributing to the conservation of the local environment and the creation of a recycling-oriented society, as well as by promoting initiatives to preserve the living and natural environments along our roads.

Environmental Action Guidelines (revised in January 2021)

NEXCO EAST will take the following actions based on its environmental policy.

I. Environmental conservation efforts

1. Contributing to preventing global warming

• Expressway will contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide by improving and strengthening the network of expressways, facilitating traffic by taking measures against traffic congestion, and improving the soundness of forests on slopes.
• We aim for zero carbon dioxide emissions in 2050.

2. Contributing to the creation of a recycling-oriented society

• By promoting 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and green procurement, we will contribute to the formation of a recycling-based society.

3. Reducing environmental impact

• We will comply with laws and regulations at all stages of our business activities and strive to reduce the environmental burden.
• We will strive to build green infrastructure for the realization of a sustainable society.
• We will endeavor to reduce the impact on the natural environment in order to contribute to the conservation of the biodiversity environment.
• We will endeavor to reduce the impact on the roadside living environment.

Ⅱ. Technology development

• In order to contribute to the sustainable and effective prevention of global warming, the formation of a recycling-based society, and the reduction of environmental impact, we will work to utilize existing technologies and develop new technologies.

III. Environmental management initiatives

1. Environmental Management

• By analyzing and evaluating the state of environmental conservation every year, we will implement our efforts in a sustainable and effective manner.
• We carry out environmental management management according to ISO14001.

2. Communication

• We will publish the results of environmental management in the "NEXCO EAST Report" to communicate with society.
• We will engage in social and environmental activities in collaboration with local people, local governments, and countries.

3. Employee training

• Through employee education, we will further raise environmental awareness and foster a corporate culture.

Employee behavior rules

Based on the "NEXCO EAST Group Action Rules for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions," employees will work towards carbon neutrality in their work.

1. Efficient use of shuttle buses, etc.

1. Environmentally friendly operation, such as stopping the engine when waiting
2. Regular vehicle inspection and maintenance, including adjusting tire pressure
3. Priority use of business travel and public transportation
4. Priority use of electric vehicles when using taxis and rental cars

2. Reducing energy consumption in company buildings

1. Thorough energy conservation through diligent power saving etc.
   1. Turn off your computer or turn off the lights during breaks or when you are away from your desk for an extended period of time
   2. Minimum lighting required at night
   3. Maintain appropriate room temperature (approximately 28°C for air conditioning and 19°C for heating)
   4. Dress lightly or in layers according to the room temperature
   5. Do not open windows or doors while air conditioning or heating is in operation, except when ventilation is necessary.
   6. Use stairs when moving around the company premises, as long as it does not affect your health.
   7. Use gas appliances efficiently, such as lowering the hot water temperature
   8. Use the refrigerator efficiently, such as by not overfilling it.
2. Reduce paper usage
   1. Digitization of documents, electronic approval, web conferencing systems, utilization of digital devices, etc.
   2. Use of double-sided printing, double-sided copying, and multi-page printing (2UP, etc.)
   3. Documents for meetings, etc. should be simplified and kept to a minimum by concisely describing the main points.
   4. Reusing unwanted copy paper and used envelopes
   5. Faxes will be abolished in principle (except when there is a business impediment)

Certifications

[ISO14001]

NEXCO EAST has acquired ISO14001 to implement sound and effective environmental management management. By running the PDCA cycle related to environmental activities, we manage environmental activities company-wide.

ISO14001 (Environment) is an international standard related to the environment that was issued by the ISO (International Organization Standard) in 1996 and provides guidelines for the introduction of environmental management systems. This standard aims to continuously improve environmental response processes in order to reduce environmental impact, and requires the creation and operation of an environmental response framework (management system) based on the PDCA cycle.
